Things That Go Bump In The Night

By Malcholm Dark

We all hung together, the kids in my neighborhood
So young and innocent, things we never understood.
But as midnight struck we were made to understand
That night Tommy Parker met up with the bogeyman!
Tommy was the smart one, he was nobodies fool
I remember the bruises that first day in school.
"It was the bogeyman and I barely got free!"
That was his line, he would say that to me.

--As children we slept under covers, our faces hid
from monsters we imagined and the evil they did.
--The shapes in the dark would give us a fright
so beware of things that go bump in the night!

The days turned to weeks, the autumn leaves fell
The nights turned to fear, see shadows from hell.
Us kids came together, a special place all our own
And Tommy needed it badly, his hideout from home.
Our eyes widened, our faces were paled
The stories told, the nightmares unveiled.
Tommy's fattened lip and a large red welt
All from the buckle of the bogeyman's belt!

--As children we slept under covers, our faces hid
from monsters we imagined and the evil they did.
--The shapes in the dark would give us a fright
so beware of things that go bump in the night!

Half the town lost their jobs, all caught off guard
The mill just closed down and the times became hard.
Tensions were high and the people were riled
Especially for one as the bogeyman went wild!
In horror we watched as that ambulance came around
Tommy laid broken and battered, he made not a sound.
That bogeyman struck terror in his own twisted way
And Tommy's father was arrested that very same day.

--So cry for our children, their faces they hide
from the monsters we are and the evil contrived.
--The uglies that stalk giving children a fright
could be their parents going bump in the night!

loved it, very well covered the lack of whitespaces between the stanza took away from it somewhat, was this intentional or darkpoetry stealing the spaces again? to preserve the spaces i use . Scholar

Well done. Breaks my heart to know that real children live in real fear every day when home is supposed to be place they feel safe.
