One Suite, one room, two genders - whole article

This is actually the final as I have handed it in the the editor... enjoy (or not)

One Suite, One Room, Two Genders

Less than four decades ago many universities had residence halls for each gender; with males barred from entering a female hall and females banned from male halls. However, many complained that separating the genders did not create a community feeling. Just as many universities contemplated creating coed residence halls in the early 1970’s, many colleges are examining gender once again – “coed” dorm rooms. Most know there are no specific buildings that require being a certain gender at JWU. However, males and females are currently not allowed to room with one another on the Providence campus.

Many students claim that they are more comfortable with the other gender. With the idea that not all students are interested in the other gender just for sex, some schools have already started making “coed” residence hall rooms a reality. One school that has just started offering this is Brown University.

A gender neutral housing policy is found on Brown’s website states “Brown discourages students of any sexual orientation who are in a relationship from living togetherÂ… though we do not question the student’s motives.” Brown also requires all students that choose gender neutral housing to be over 18, fill the room occupancy (3 beds – 3 people), apply together, and consent to living with the roommates chosen. Brown stresses that this works with the current Residential Life policies and does not change the way a student goes about registering for an on campus room.

Although many universities have started gender neutral housing Dameian Slocum, Director of Residential Life, does not envision implementing a gender neutral policy on our campus in the near future. While not discounting that gender neutral housing could someday be a positive thing at JWU Providence, his primary concern is expanding the capacity of on campus housing.

Slocum also explained that the Charlotte campus has started a gender neutral policy this school year. In an attempt to clarify many rumors, Slocum restates “Charlotte, not North Miami has a gender neutral policy”. When asked why the Charlotte campus is able to have coed residence rooms but the Providence campus is not, Slocum reiterated that the Charlotte campus has a much different situation. Charlotte wants more students to stay on campus while Res Life here needs more places for residents to live on campus.

Though it’s not the only factor, many universities, like Brown, with a vocal population of LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual, Trans-sexual, Queer) activists often see these ground breaking policies first. As for Brown all you have to do is look at the campus map to explore all the genderless rooms and bathrooms.

To discourage relationship problems a gender neutral housing policy can be found on Brown’s website. The website states “Brown discourages students of any sexual orientation who are in a relationship from living togetherÂ… though we do not question the student’s motives.” Brown also requires all students that choose gender neutral housing to be over 18, fill the room to full occupancy (3 beds need 3 people), to apply together, and consent to living with the roommates chosen. Brown stresses that this works with the current Residential Life policies and does not change the way a student goes about registering for an on campus room.

Although many universities have started gender neutral housing Damien (Last Name), Director of Residential Life does not envision implementing a gender neutral policy on our campus in the near future. While not discounting that gender neutral housing could someday be a positive thing in Providence he more concerned with the current lack of on campus housing. (DamionLastName) also explained
that the Charlotte campus had started a gender neutral policy this school year. In an attempt to clarify many rumors, (Damien) restates “Charlotte, not North Miami has a gender neutral policy”. When asked why the Charlotte campus was able to have “Coed dorms” but Providence was not (Damien) reiterated that the Charlotte campus has a much different situation, Charlotte wants more students to say on campus while Res Life here needs more places for residents to live on campus.

Not the only factor, many universities with vocal LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual, Trans-sexual, Queer) communities are the first to implement the new policies. Unlike many universities JWU Providence does not have a very vocal LGBTQ community.

honestly... the 'gender' dispute .. (among various other social issues) needs to be shelved until further notice. preferably when "we" figure out how to jump start the (stalled) evolution process.

side note: given the fact that i am a natural born (killer... i mean) female... my comment will most likely be undermined then disregarded as emotional... whereas a cock toting tranny or a feminine male would be celebrated for his/her bravery.
