Gutter Lily

By Narcissa

On the corner
Stood a man with a sign
"Why lie? I need a beer"

At the street light
Stood a woman with a sign
"I need a miracle"

An emaciated scar
She was lavender thriving in winter
Her raven locks struggled against a net of dew
Like famished birds trying to flee a corpse
A shepherd hook grin
Never reached eyes of anticipating coffins

A gutter lily
Picking away scabs like festering petals
With meth for lunch
And heroine a hobby
Strapped to the tracks
With no train coming
She discarded her cardboard elegy

The woman crossed the street
and joined the man
On the corner

Empty Handed.

Stunning observational poetry capable of bringing the most stubborn ego back to earth. Great stuff.

"And heroine a hobby Strapped to the tracks With no train coming" Very very clever. Impeccable descriptions with multiple meanings. I always love this kind of subject matter as well. I feel like there is always something unseen we can learn from the pariah of society. Interesting that she ends up 'empty handed' because a miracle is too much to ask. And empty handed symbolic of alone - with the other man but not holding his hand not truly "WITH" those around her. I am so thoroughly impressed. The intricacy is admirable. You write some mighty powerful stuff!

I used to work on one of Tulsa's major streets, right where the highway crossed over, and I watched this story every day. Beer is an easier get than miracles.

It's beautiful. It really does depict the horrors of, well, all the bad things we see....
